Preserving the Past, Inspiring the Future

The Re48 Storehouse, designed by Yu-Hsiang Su and Wei-Hung Wang, is a testament to the beauty of repurposing industrial spaces. The designers were inspired by the freedom that the storehouse provided in reimagining new commercial spaces for various functions. The result is a compound space that houses a cafe, a gallery, a tile showroom, and a design studio.

One of the key strengths of the Re48 Storehouse is its commitment to preserving the original design of the space. Rather than erasing the old, the designers sought to celebrate the rawness and unique features of the ex-metal factory. The ultra-high ceilings, exposed rough metal structures, and industrial machinery were all kept intact, adding character and a sense of history to the space.

The realization of the design involved a creative adaptation of the interior spans of the factory. A timber framework, reminiscent of the larger steel roofing frame, was used in combination with special lighting techniques to create a multilayer visual effect. The slight difference in angle between the internal timber frame and the steel roofing counterpart adds another layer of design interest.

The Re48 Storehouse offers a seamless integration of different functions within its open space design. The 14-meter-long coffee bar, divided into three sections - a pastry counter, a hand-drip coffee bar, and an espresso bar - pays homage to the factory assembly line. Visitors can observe the "assembly line" from their seats, creating a unique and immersive experience.

Separate entrances lead to the tile showroom, which doubles as an art gallery. The tiles can be turned by the audience, creating an interesting dynamic between the two spaces without disturbing each other. For those interested in the history of the old metal factory, the gallery on the second floor provides an up-close view of the industrial machines, all while enjoying artwork or live music.
